A throwback for kids born in the 1990s came with the announcement that former Nickelodeon actor Kel Mitchell has become a youth pastor.

Mitchell announced in an online post on Sunday that he has become a licensed pastor, the Christian Post reports.

"Blessed and thankful for my Spirit Food Family and thank you Pastor [Garry D.] Zeigler for seeing the calling of God on my life and trusting me with your youth department," Mitchell says.

The actor, who starred on Nickelodeon's All That and Kenan and Kel, is now a youth pastor at Spirit Food Christian Center in Winnetka, California.

Quoting Romans 8:28-29 in his post, Mitchell says, "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters."

Since starring on Nickelodeon sitcoms, Mitchell also acted in various television shows and movies during the 1990s and 2000s including The Steve Harvey Show.

The actor struggled for a time while trying to gain traction in his career. Personal problems, too, wore on Mitchell. In 2015, the actor posted to his website announcing he was going through a divorce and experiencing suicidal thoughts.

"Suicidal, divorce, drug and alcohol usage, deep in sin, dealing with the lost [sic] of [loved] ones to gang violence, debt, hurt, pain, vanity, lust, heartbreak, feeling LOST looking for answers," Mitchell says in his 2015 post. "I have seen, felt and been in all types of sin and have been done wrong by others."

He says becoming a Christian is what brought him peace.

Mitchell, who has since remarried, acted as a stage manager for a Los Angeles church for a time before pursuing the path of becoming a pastor.

He says he knows that no matter how sad he may feel, "I have my God that will destroy sorrow in its tracks."
