A Manitoba woman says that the moment a larger than life ultrasound went up in Times Square a hush fell over the crowd.

Sue Rempel Doerksen of Mitchell, MB, was among the 20,000 people at Times Square on the weekend for Focus on the Family's Alive from New York event. The event included testimonies of abortion survivors, and performances by artists including Francesca Battistelli. But the main purpose of the event was to display a live 4D ultrasound of a baby in the womb

"They started the live ultrasound and it was just hushed. It was beautiful. It was so incredible to see that baby up there."

Rempel Doerksen was in New York for a conference, and when she heard about the event she said she had to be there.

"It was just incredible," she says about standing in the midst of thousands of people as they sang 'Amazing Grace' and 'Jesus Loves Me.'

Protesters attempted to disrupt fell short

Rempel Doerksen says that pro-choice protesters were on hand, drumming and trying to drown out the speakers. But those protesters faded away, and the only sound left in Times Square was the sound of a baby's heartbeat.

"They started the live ultrasound and it was just hushed. It was beautiful. It was so incredible to see that baby up there."

As the sound of the heartbeat played over the speakers throughout Times Square, Rempel Doerksen said everyone gasped as it began. "Many of us have heard that sound before through our own pregnancies, or of someone else that we know. But it's so beautiful. Each time you hear it, it's so unique. It's just amazing."

Protesters in one area did leave an unattended package, which resulted in police removing people from that area. But Rempel Doerksen says it was far from the main stage and overall did not impact the event.

All-in-all she says there is no way to describe the event other than, "incredible. There are no words to adequately describe it, I think. I just keep going back to those same two words (incredible and amazing)."
