A months-long independent investigation has concluded that accusations of sexual misconduct made against megachurch pastor Billy Hybels are credible.

An Independent Advisory Group (IAG) made up of notable evangelical leaders was formed last year at the request of Willow Creek Community Church (WCCC) and the Willow Creek Association (WCA) after new allegations were launched against Hybels.

This past week their findings were released in a 17-page report. The report says that "The credibility of the allegations is not based on any one accusation or accuser but on the collective testimony and context of the allegations."

Those allegations included sexual harassment and misconduct, including suggestive remarks, invitations to his hotel rooms, prolonged hugs, and an unwanted kiss.

The report also says that Hybels "verbally and emotionally intimidated both female and male employees."

The AIG also said that the WCA board "should have taken greater responsibility to understand the nature and context of the allegation."

The AIG was made up of Jo Anne Lyon, General Superintendent Emerita of the Wesleyan Church; Margaret Diddams, Provost of Wheaton College; Gary Walter, past president of the Evangelical Covenant Church; and Leith Anderson, President of the National Association of Evangelicals.

The AIG was able to speak with all women who made accusations. They also spoke with staff of both organizations, Hybels, and members of the Hybels family.

Elder board asks for prayer

Last April the entire elder board of WCCC resigned, as did Bill Hybels, and other key pastoral staff.

An entirely new elder board was installed in January of 2019. They made a statement this week highlighting the IAG's findings.

"As a new Elder Board, we ask for your prayers and patience as we process this report and prepare appropriate responses and actions," they said in an online statement.

"While we cannot change the events of the past, we grieve what has happened, ask for forgiveness, and commit ourselves to pursuing healing and reconciliation.

"Thank you for your prayers and faithful engagement in the life and ministry of our church during this season. We remain confident in God’s goodness and in His plans for us, His church."
