An army reservist who has been accused of recruiting members to a neo-Nazi terrorist group has been fired from the Canadian Armed Forces.

Master Cpl. Patrik Mathews, a member of the Winnipeg-based 38 Canadian Brigade Group, was the subject of an undercover story by a Winnipeg Free Press reporter. The story alleged that Matthews was recruiting members to a neo-Nazi group called The Base.

Matthews had been in the reserves as a combat engineer since 2010. The military says they had no choice but to let Matthews go.

“The action was deemed necessary, considering the seriousness of the allegations and the risk to unit morale and cohesion,” the Department of National Defence says in a statement.

The RCMP raided Matthews' home in Beausejour, Man. a week ago. He has not been charged with any crimes, but police did remove a number of weapons from the home.
