The Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Canada announced his resignation on Tuesday, January 9.

Fred J. Hiltz, Archbishop and Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, announced his resignation of Primate on Tuesday, January 9 on the Anglican church website, effective July 16 at the General Synod 2019.

He recalls, "In 2017, I marked 40 years in ordained ministry and 40 years of marriage with my dear Lynne. For 23 of those 40 years I have served our Church as a bishop, and for 10 of those 23 as Primate."

Hiltz claims this is not an office to which he aspired to, but endeavoured to fulfil as a duty required of him in the best interests of the church and it's commitment to God's mission in Canada.

"It has been an enormous privilege and a great adventure with blessings beyond number."

On December 3, 2018, Fred J Hiltz will reach the age of 65 of which he claims is no secret to the Church. He wished to clarify any whispered speculations about his intentions about retirement.

"At some length, I have considered how much longer I should remain in office. In all honesty, there are days when I wonder if I might not be coming very close to the 'best before' date in the leadership I am providing."

He assured that he had examined the scenarios for which Canon III on The Primate makes provision with respect to resignation.

"My discernment has brought me to a decision to resign at the conclusion of General Synod 2019... Having consulted with the other Metropolitans and [others]... I have jointly determined that my resignation takes effect July 16, 2019. On that day the 42nd Session of The Meeting of General Synod will conclude its work and will celebrate the election of a new Primate."

He asks for understanding and respect towards the decision he has made, as well as patience and perseverance.

"Know that I remain ever grateful for your prayers and for the multitude of ways in which you have and continue to support me in my ministry. Know that my prayers for our beloved Church are very much in accord with the affection with which St Paul held the Church in Philippi."
