Mounties are sharing how a Manitoban town's growing population and demand on RCMP is resulting in a new police detachment.

Niverville, a community 33 kilometres south of Winnipeg, is seeing recent growth. At the end of the year, it is expected to surpass five thousand residents, requiring a Municipal Police Service Agreement. RCMP will be this provider.

"With the Town of Niverville growing rapidly in population, the RCMP is excited to be involved in the planning and looks forward to providing a permanent presence in the town," an RCMP Manitoba spokesperson says.

Over the past five years, 10-12 per cent of all St. Pierre RCMP calls have come from Niverville, a community 19 kilometres north of the town's detachment. This amounts to an average of 675 calls a year over the past five years.

"D Division RCMP has been meeting regularly with officials from the Town of Niverville over the past year, in order to plan for an eventual opening of a new RCMP Detachment in Niverville," the spokesperson says. "A new Niverville Detachment would initially be staffed by four RCMP members and would be responsible for policing within the town boundaries. Administrative services, such as criminal record checks, would also be available at the new detachment."
