The Consumer Protection Office (CPO) wants to remind Manitobans to be aware and review terms before they purchase that great Boxing Day deal.

Boxing Day deals can be incredible, but if you aren't careful when you purchase it, you could get stuck with something you cannot return, or have a warranty that doesn't cover what you need.

The CPO says you should review warranty and return policies in each store, as every store sets their own. Some stores offer a full refund while others only offer an exchange. Special terms could apply to items on sale, making them nonrefundable. The CPO says consumers should consider all sales final.

They also recommend keeping receipts as proof of purchase, as well as a written reminder of a store's return or exchange policy.

As for warranties, the CPO says that sellers in Manitoba are responsible for all the shipping costs and other incidental expenses of having an item repaired or replaced. As a consumer, you must also receive a written record of all repairs or replacements that are made under warranty.

Electronics and appliances, as well as other more expensive items, may come with full or limited warranties. The CPO says consumers should read warranties very carefully and focus on what is covered and how long it is covered. Before purchasing an extended warranty from the store, ask for the details of the manufacturer's warranty that come with the product.
