Two fires in Winnipeg garages are believed to have been caused by electrical failures due to block heaters.

The Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a fire in a detached garage on the first block of Hatcher Road at around 4:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, 2020.

Smoke and flames were seen coming from the garage as crews arrived. The fire was extinguished quickly, WFPS says.

This was the second garage fire in less than 12 hours, as WFPS had also responded to another fire in a detached garage on Weatherdon Avenue at 8:12 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16.

Heavy smoke and flames were seen by crews indicated this fire also as crews arrived. The fire was declared to be under control by 8:29 p.m.

There are no damage estimates available in the Jan. 16 fire, according to WFPS.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

It is believed both fires were caused by electrical failures, as block heaters on vehicles inside each garage were plugged in at the time of the incidents.
