95 people took part in a sleep out this year in support of Pan Am Place and Pan Am Boxing Club.

Their goal was to have 100 people sleep out and raise $100,000 in donations.

Organizers said they wouldn't have an estimate on how much money was raised until a couple days after the sleep out was complete.

The people who slept out included staff members and volunteers with Pan Am Place, an organization that helps young homeless men get back on their feet by offering them boxing training, volunteer opportunities, job and school assistance and a warm place to sleep.

The rest of the sleepers were either supporters or men who use Pan Am Place's services.

Although they are not required to participate, a number of the men being housed at Pan Am Place took part because they wanted to give back to an organization that's helped them.

"People may think this is something that happens one night out of the year but for a lot of people this happens every day of the year," Dylan Friesen said. "This is an important way for us to show that we're aware that this is going on and we care."

As someone who has experience with homelessness, Friesen says he appreciates the support.

"It shows how much a small group can make an effort to show they care about this cause," he said. "I feel better knowing these people know what it's like to spend one night outside, not knowing where you're going to eat or sleep."

Thomas McKay said it was a challenging and cold night that brought back tough memories for him, but he doesn't regret doing it.

"A little past 2:30 (am) the noise was still up and then it started to die down as people fell asleep," Ross said. "I got up because my toes were freezing so I had to walk around a bit and everyone was huddled around the fire. They were quiet and the real test was on."

"They're coming to an understanding of a person's point of view of being homeless for a night."

Trevor Brass said it was a long and tough night, but the support made him happy.

"We've all been through a lot to get here and it's just great to have that from people."

This is the second annual Pan Am Place Bold in the Cold Sleep Out.
