It was a scary start to the day for students, drivers, and loved ones after a school bus collided with a semi on the outskirts of Winnipeg Wednesday morning.

A school bus contracted by St. James-Assiniboia School Division collided with a semi-trailer at the intersection of Monterey Road and Highway 1 around 7:45 a.m.. The bus was en route to Collège Sturgeon Heights Collegiate with six students on board, according to a press release from the St. James-Assiniboia School Division.

Jenness Moffat, superintendent of the division, says there was a very quick response from emergency crews, including RCMP, Headingley Fire Rescue, provincial EMS, and Stars Air Ambulance. Although both the driver and students were understandably shaken there were no significant injuries reported. Bright Beginnings Daycare stepped in to provide temporary shelter until alternate transportation arrangements were confirmed.

"Our hearts go out to the students and drivers impacted by this collision," Moffat says in the release.

"We want to express deep appreciation to the staff of Bright Beginnings Daycare for providing temporary accommodation to the impacted students. We also want to thank the emergency personnel for their professional and compassionate response to this incident."

The RCMP says that the bus had attempted to stop when heading soutbound on Highway 334 and coming to the intersection of Highway 1. However, an icy road caused the bus to slide into the intersection. The semi, which was headed westbound on Highway 1 ended up jackknifing in a failed attempt to avoid the bus.

Collège Sturgeon Heights Collegiate staff are actively reaching out to families affected by the incident, offering counseling and support. The school division is in close contact with emergency services, pledging full cooperation with any RCMP investigation. A debrief is scheduled, and SJASD says they will be following all provincial requirements related to the incident.
