The City of Winnipeg says they expect a busy Winnipeg street to be closed through the morning rush hour as firefighters work to extinguish a blaze.

The City of Winnipeg has announced that Arlington is closed in both directions between Logan and William as a result of the fire.

A caller first alerted CHVN to the fire at 6:00 a.m. They said when they passed by the area around 2:30 a.m. it looked like a large fire was occurring in the area of Arlington and Logan.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says a fire broke out in a one and a half storey house in the 900 block of Alexander Avenue at around 1:30 a.m..

When crews arrived on scene they found a well involved fire with heavy smoke and flames.

Due to the intensity of the fire, crews were forced to use a defensive strategy to fight the flames, while protecting adjacent structures. Crews will remain on scene for the next several hours ensuring all hotspots are extinguished.

The house is believed to be vacant. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire will be under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.

The City's Traffic Management Centre says that Logan is also flooded as a result of the water being used to extinguish the blaze.

It's recommended to avoid the area completely this morning if you're able.
