Cities coast to coast are being hit with extreme winter weather but an east-coast city is asking residents to return home.

St.John's, Newfoundland is being hit extremely hard today with their snowstorm. The mayor has ordered all businesses to close and for residents to return to their homes immediately.

All motor vehicles have been ordered off the road and city services have been suspended until the order is lifted. Emergency services are permitted to work and be on the road.

The city is expecting "significantly exceeding high" tides to hit the city tonight at midnight and sometime Saturday afternoon. Winds up to 120 km/h are expected to gust into the city.

Snowfall levels could reach between 35 to 75 cm for the city.
