Due to a severe food crisis in Somalia, Nigeria, South Sudan, Yemen, and the surrounding areas, the Canadian Government has announced that it will match donations for famine response dollar for dollar.

This is through the new Famine Relief Fund and is retroactive from March 17 and goes until June 30, 2017.

The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development, stated in a news release, “Canadians have always demonstrated great compassion when it comes to humanitarian crises. Together, we can make a difference and bring relief to people who need urgent help.”

Donations are only eligible if they have been given to a registered Canadian charity such as the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

The Foodgrains Bank has been able to provide over 2 and a half million dollars worth of assistance to over 72,000 people in Somalia, Nigeria, and South Sudan since January 2017.

Foodgrains Bank Executive Director Jim Cornelius stated in a news release, “I hope the match from the Canadian government will spur many more Canadians to donate to help people who are suffering.”

Famine has officially been declared in parts of South Sudan and may be declared in Yemen, Nigeria, and Somalia as well due to the severe hunger being experienced in those countries.

Donations to the Foodgrains Bank that are specifically allocated to this issue are also eligible to be matched 4 to 1 through the ongoing grant agreement with the Canadian Government.
