The improper use of candles, says Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS), is responsible for a blaze on Wednesday morning.

"At 8:19 a.m. on October 23, 2019," WFPS says, "responded to reports of a fire in a single-family bungalow in the 1800 block of William Avenue."

An offensive attack was launched as crews who arrived on the scene observed smoke coming from the home.

People in the house had safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of WFPS and while one individual required assessment on scene by paramedics, they did not require transport to the hospital.

The fire was deemed under control before 9 a.m.

"The fire was caused by the improper use of candles," says WFPS.

Candle Safety Tips:

  • Never leave lit candles unattended.

  • Use approved non-combustible candleholders or bases, and place candleholders on a firm, non-slip surface.

  • Avoid putting lit candles in a drafty area to prevent uneven burning and wax dripping.

  • Extinguish a candle when it burns down to within two inches of its holder or base.

  • Keep candles away from any flammable materials, decorations, curtains, or other combustible materials like bedding or cushions.

  • Keep wicks trimmed to half an inch and remove excess wax before storage

  • Long, crooked wicks can cause uneven burning and wax drippings

  • Always keep candles, matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
