One cat is dead after an early morning fire on Thursday in a North End duplex.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to a call of a fire at a one-and-a-half storey duplex in the 600 block of Alfred Avenue shortly before 4 a.m. on May 30.

Smoke was coming form the structure when crews arrived on the scene. They launched an offensive attack, and used hose lines to apply water to the fire. The blaze was declared under control at 5:02 a.m.

Residents were able to self-evacuate before firefighters arrived. Paramedics assessed multiple people on scene and transported one to hospital in unstable condition.

After searching the building, crews located two cats, one of which was dead.

The City’s Emergency Social Services team was called to help find temporary accommodations for displaced residents.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
