A Winnipeg congregation was forced to cancel their first worship gathering Sunday morning due to a suspicious package left at the building.

Oasis Church said on their Facebook page that Sunday's 9:30 a.m. service haD been cancelled "due to unforeseen circumstances."

Const. Jay Murray of the Winnipeg Police Service says officers were called to the church in the 900 block of Elmhurst Road around 7:35 Sunday morning.

Murray says that there was a suspicious package at the front of the church.

Police tape could be seen at the front of the building, and officers were in the parking lot.

The package was cleared, and the church confirmed on their social media that their 11:15 a.m. service will go ahead as planned.

"Thank you to the Winnipeg Police Services and our Security Team," the church says. "A suspicious package from outside our building has been removed and we have been cleared to proceed safely."

The package was taken to a different site to be examined by police, Murrays says.

Update - 12:30 p.m.

The Winnipeg Police Service says that the package has been determined to not be a threat.

"Officers have examined the package, and the contents are not believed to be harmful or dangerous. The matter is not being treated as a criminal incident at this time."
