Fifteen community centres will soon be getting an upgrade.

The City of Winnipeg’s Community Centre Renovation Grant program received 16 applications during the spring application period to improve local centres, requesting a total of $1,165,157.91. With only one denial, a total of $1,158,739.71 will be distributed across 15 different centres.

The grants will be used to upgrade the facility and make needed safety improvements.

“As the Province of Manitoba continues to reopen the economy, community centres will become important places for our residents again,” Mayor Brian Bowman says. "The Community Centre Renovation Grant program is an important City of Winnipeg resource that helps ensure our existing community assets are up-to-date, safe, and accessible so they can be enjoyed for years to come.”

The 15 centres receiving grants include:

  • Dakota
  • Fort Garry
  • Garden City
  • Gateway
  • Glenwood
  • Linden Woods
  • Maples
  • Melrose Park

“Community centres play an integral role in creating strong communities, as they provide recreational, cultural, and social activities,” Councillor Sherri Rollins, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Protection, Community Services and Parks says. “We are happy to provide funding that upgrades our centres to make them accessible and safe while improving the well-being of Winnipeg residents.”

Since the inception of the Community Centre Renovation Grant program in 2012, the City has distributed $8,821,624.99 to 195 community centre projects.
