City employees are working around the clock to make sure that Winnipeggers are prepared for any type of flooding as we roll into spring.

The City is reviewing its river flood protection measures, making preparations for temporary and permanent pumping, closing river gates, and sealing manholes, among other activities.

For the most part, Winnipeg will not be hit hard by spring flooding, but that doesn't mean that overland flooding will not be an issue.

"In the spring time when temperatures are rising and snow is melting, overland flooding can be a problem in Winnipeg," said Ken Allen, city of Winnipeg, public works department. "When that happens, the city makes sandbags available to property owners so that they can protect their property from any water damage."

Winnipeggers can pick up sandbags fro overland flooding between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. at three locations including:

  • 1220 Pacific Avenue
  • 1539 Waverley Street
  • 960 Thomas Avenue

Residents picking up sandbags for overland flooding will be required to provide photo identification to confirm their Winnipeg residency.

Details on the City’s response to potential river flooding will be determined once the Province of Manitoba presents its updated detailed outlook, which is anticipated in the coming days.
