With warmer weather on the horizon and a change of season just around the corner, Winnipeg is preparing for possible spring flooding.

In an attempt to be prepared for a major event, the city is asking the province for money to stockpile sandbags and emergency equipment that would be deployed if necessary.

The Winnipeg public works department also wants to purchase an emergency response trailer outfitted with hand tools, temporary dikes, a generator and gas pumps.

The City of Winnipeg is eligible for up to $500,000 in funding from the provincial government when it comes to flood-fighting efforts.

Manitoba has not yet released its spring flood outlook, but the U.S National Weather Service has, and it says there is a high risk of major flooding in North Dakota and Minnesota along parts of the Red River.

Earlier this week, the Mayor of Grand Forks signed an emergency declaration in anticipation of a historic spring flood.

The province is expected to release its first spring flood outlook next week.
