Local singer-songwriter Steve Bell was honoured by Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) last night.

The 2018 CMU PAX Award, presented to those who dedicate themselves to service, leadership, and reconciliation, was given to Steve Bell last night.

"(The award) is a way of honouring someone for the ways they embody the best of what CMU is called to do," said Dr. Cheryl Pauls, president of CMU.

The award, presented at CMU's annual spring fundraiser, was given to Bell for work he has done on a number of projects related to reconciliation. These include supporting Bill C-262 and advocating for Freedom Road, a permanent, all-season road for Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.

"His singing over the years has drawn people over lots of divides," said Dr. Pauls. "Then, through this voice as a singer-songwriter, been a person that has allowed himself to be present within peoples that are marginalized."

Dr. Pauls says CMU students are already actively involved in service and leadership throughout the community, but hopes awarding someone like Bell will encourage her students to continue investing in their community and working towards reconciliation.

The CMU PAX Award includes an honorarium that goes to an organization chosen by the recipitent. This year, Bell chose Share the Gifts, Honour the Treaties.
