The Reeve of Stuartburn is taken aback by all the support he has received from the community of Zhoda and the RM of Stuartburn after his house burned down this past Sunday.

Jim Swidersky lost his house when a grass fire burned through a number of properties in the area.

Lucie Maynard is the Chief Administrative Officer for the RM of Stuartburn. She says many people in the municipality have expressed their desire to help out.

“We had quite a few people coming in or calling, wanting to help out in some way so we decided to open up an account at the Access Credit Union here in Vita and it is called Donation for Jim Swidersky. He asked me today why I was doing this and I said, ‘because you have an outpouring of support and people want to help out.”

Swidersky says the support has been a bit overwhelming. He notes he has received messages and phone calls from council members, residents of Stuartburn, and community leaders from across the province.

“The Ridge Road Women’s group had made me a pillow and a quilt. I am taken aback, the outreach has been heartfelt. I am very surprised but I am not at the same time. I know what the region and Manitobans are all about. When things get tough, they help out. This time it was me and I am very very very thankful.”

Swidersky says for now he is working with an insurance adjuster and looking ahead to the rebuilding process. He says he is very proud to be a part of the community and always will be.

Maynard says anyone can stop by an Access Credit Union branch and donate to the account or send a cheque by mail to box 88 Vita Manitoba, R08 2K0.
