Over 100 firefighters who have died in the line of duty in Manitoba are being honoured with a new monument, along with fallen peace officers and other workers killed on the job.

Alex Forrest, who is the president of the Manitoba Fallen Firefighters Foundations as well as the United Firefighters of Winnipeg, says it's been a long time coming.

"I am honoured to announce that after over 15 years of lobbying and hard work, construction has begun on the Manitoba Fallen Firefighters Memorial," Forrest says in an online post.

The monument is going up in the southwest corner of Memorial Park across from the Manitoba legislative building, a site that was chosen in 2015. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in the spring of 2018, and now in the summer of 2020 construction has begun on the three-monument piece.

"This solemn memorial will recognize the line of duty deaths of over 110 Manitoba firefighters from all areas of firefighting," Forrest says. "This is the work of all firefighters in Manitoba who are truly brothers and sisters of one family. This will be a memorial that all of the citizens of Manitoba will be proud of."
