A Winnipeg police officer assigned to the photo radar department after being charged with assault now faces more accusations of misconduct.

On October 1, 2019, while driving a private vehicle, Patrol Sergeant Sean Cassidy was captured speeding on photo radar. The officer then made unauthorized entries into a Winnipeg Police Service computer system to prevent the speeding ticket from issuing, thereby frustrating and defeating the court process related to it.

"This is something that Srg. Cassidy will have to answer to."

This accusation occurred while awaiting trial in connection with an off-duty arrest in 2017 that placed the officer on desk duty. The assault occurred on March 27, 2017. Sergeant Cassidy was off duty when he punched and kneed a suspect. According to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) the assault caused a number of head injuries to a 32-year-old male.

Cassidy, who is 48 years old, has now been charged with fraud, obstructing justice, and unauthorized use of a computer.

"This is something that Srg. Cassidy will have to answer to," says Chief Danny Smyth.

The officer has been put on paid administrative leave and will not be placed on desk duty again.
