A "dangerous situation" yesterday involving flying debris has left part of Pembina Highway closed into Sunday morning.

On Saturday afternoon, Winnipeg police tweeted that Pembina Hwy southbound was closed at Bison Drive to all traffic due to a dangerous situation.

"Police are requesting that people seek an alternative route to go south on Pembina at Bison Drive," police tweeted.

A second tweet added that high winds might potentially blow debris from a nearby construction site into the situation.

Winnipeg police say they will advise the public when the area is safe again. This has not yet been done.

An update shared a few hours later by police stated two road closures would remain in effect.

The merge lane on Bison Dr onto southbound Pembina and the curb lane on southbound Pembina from Bison Drive are both affected.

At the time, police estimated the closure would last into Sunday morning.

Barricades were set up by police to guide traffic.
