It's been four days since a devastating fire destroyed an apartment complex in the St. James area leaving at least 180 people without a home.

Just after 7 p.m. on Friday, emergency crews responded to the four-storey building on Quail Ridge Road and Saskatchewan Avenue.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) Platoon Chief Brent Cheater says due to the structure and nature of the building, the fire spread quickly through the 47-suite complex.

"Residents will not be able to return to this building. It is structurally not sound," said Platoon Chief Brent Cheate. "Damage is significant."

After hearing this, St. James residents quickly banded together to help those without a place to live.

A neighbouring apartment complex on Quail Ridge Road set up a donation drop-off spot for clothing, toys and toiletries. They were quickly overrun, leading to a second location opening up at the Assiniboia West Recreation Centre at Morgan Avenue.

Both locations say they have enough clothing, shoes and blankets. They are now looking for specific donations, including baby items, pet items, pet food, school items (backpacks, lunch bags and binders), toiletries and non-perishable food items.

Donations can be dropped off at 305 Morgan Avenue or 180 Quail Ridge Road.
