Easter is approaching and warm memories of family get-togethers with parents, grandparents, cousins and siblings of past gatherings come to mind when social-distancing wasn’t the protocol.

Dr. Brent Roussin, Manitoba’s Chief Public Health Officer, shared the traditions of gatherings now during the Easter holiday season, but continues to warn Manitobans to stay home to keep everyone safe during today’s latest COVID-19 update at the Manitoba Legislature.

“As the pandemic continues, we continue to ask Manitobans to take significant precautions.  We know that these precautions can present a challenge but we’re also aware the significant risk this virus can pose to Manitoba," Roussin says.

“The social-distancing messaging will continue to remain and should be everyone’s focus. Stay home whenever you can. It’s your best way to protect yourself, people around you and your community in general, including our health-care providers.”

Roussin says his message also applies to family dinners centred around the holidays.

“There are many planned holidays coming up and it’s the norm for many Manitobans to get together, sometimes in large family gatherings. Now, unfortunately, is not the time for that.”

“The time remains to be staying at home. If possible, stay connected through virtual means.  Now is not the time for family gatherings.  We know that in many jurisdictions there has been transmission of the virus in these settings.”

“Please stay connected. Please reach out, especially to vulnerable Manitobans, but now is the time to stay home," Roussin reminds Manitobans.

"We have seen evidence of community-based transmission. The social distancing strategies need to be adhered to wherever you are in Manitoba. Absolutely stay at home if you are sick."

Roussin also advises Manitobans stay connected to their healthcare providers and to call Healthlinks with any questions.

“We are not helpless against this virus. We have roles that all Manitobans can play, starting today, to reduce the risk of this virus.”
