It appears a blockade at the international border near Emerson is set to end. The news comes nearly a week after protesters parked trucks and large farm equipment across the north and southbound lanes of PTH 75, blocking commercial traffic from coming and going across the boundary.

"Since the beginning of the blockade of Highway 75 at Provincial Road 243, Manitoba RCMP officers have worked to peacefully resolve the situation," said Chief Superintendent Rob Hill, Officer in Charge of Criminal Operations for the Manitoba RCMP, in an update on Tuesday afternoon. "We are now confident that a resolution has been reached and that demonstrators will soon be leaving the area, and that full access to the Emerson Port of Entry will be restored."

Hill added, Manitoba RCMP is coordinating the departure of the remaining demonstrators and expects it will be completed by Wednesday, February 16, 2022.

The turn of events comes a day after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act, and following news that the Coutts, Alberta demonstration drew to a close earlier in the day.

In a joint statement from Premier Heather Stefanson and Justice Minister Kelvin Goertzen, the leaders say they "are encouraged by reports that those efforts seem to be producing a peaceful resolution.

"We commend the expert and professional management of the provincial RCMP in respectfully de-escalating this situation without the use of force."

Stefanson and Goertzen also criticized the prime minister's decision to use the Emergencies Act.

"As we have consistently advised the federal government, local RCMP have always maintained that they have had all the tools and resources required to manage this situation and develop tactical options. The sweeping effect and unprecedented use of the federal Emergencies Act was not and is not required in Manitoba."

They also call on the "federal government to help ease tensions across our nation by clearly communicating a plan and timetable to relax all border measures for the benefit of all Canadians, including the mandate for truckers, and by collaboratively re-engaging with the U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration on these overdue goals."

The plan, according to reports, is that the Emerson demonstrators will leave together in a slow roll Wednesday.
