A family from the RM of Springfield is recovering from a harrowing ordeal after a man broke into their home and attacked them with a knife.

RCMP Manitoba says that members of the Oakbank detachment were called on Thursday about the invasion just before 6 a.m.

Police say that the 27-year-old suspect was known to the family.

"A struggle ensued where a 66-year-old male was injured. A 58-year-old female intervened and was able to disarm the suspect which allowed the family the opportunity to exit the residence and call police," the RCMP says in a release.

When police arrived the man had barricaded himself inside the home. They were able to talk with him and convinced him to leave the home and took him into custody.

The man and woman from the home, as well as a 24-year-old female, were all taken to hospital with minor injuries, police say.

The suspect remains in police custody with criminal charges pending.

Oakbank RCMP continues to investigate.
