The family of a 14-month-old toddler with an esophageal disorder is frustrated that the Manitoba government won't cover the only food his mother says he can keep down.

Harley Loewen has to be fed through a tube and the formula his mother says he can tolerate costs $900 a month.

The formula, Nourish, is offered as a subscription service and claims they use organic and seasonal ingredients from local farmers, are non-GMO, and the animals producing food for the company are grass-fed and free-range.

Chyanne Loewen says she thinks it is not covered because it costs almost $300 more a month than the formula the province provides.

A spokesperson for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority says any new formulas must be recommended by Manitoban dietitians. The new formula also must cover something new for the baby that other formulas currently do not have. If approved, the new formulas would become available to all Manitobans requiring the formula.

Officials are working with the family to find a solution.
