A Winnipeg family was caught up in a police chase on Wednesday afternoon.

Around 1 p.m. a patrol unit, near Raleigh Street and Chalmers Avenue noticed a stolen vehicle travelling nearby.

Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) says, "As the police unit followed, the stolen vehicle came to an abrupt stop. Officers turned on their emergency lighting at which time the stolen vehicle drove up on a curb and fled at a high rate of speed."

The officers did not pursue the vehicle, however, the suspect continued to drive dangerously and began to ignore stop signs in the area.

As the stolen vehicle came to the intersection of Chalmers Avenue and Watt Street, it struck an SUV with a couple and their 5-year-old daughter inside.

After causing significant damage to the SUV, the driver of the stolen vehicle fled on foot. The officers engaged in a foot chase and apprehended the male in the 400 block of Harbison Avenue West.

WPS says, "The occupants of the SUV were checked by members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service but did not require medical attention. The suspect was treated at a hospital for injuries from the collision and was medically cleared soon after."

Officers conducted a search of the stolen vehicle which resulted in the discovery and seizure of a large knife and a .6 gram bag of methamphetamine.
