Road trips can be difficult with a family, especially as that family grows. Here's some advice from a local father of five.

Dr. Trevor Clark is not only a chiropractor at Connect Chiropractic and one of the experts on our Mind Body and Soul program, but he's also a father of five. Most would shy away from road trips with that large of a family, but Dr. Clark doesn't have much of a choice.

"My family is all in Saskatchewan . . . so it's a good nine or ten hour drive," Dr. Clark said.

One of Dr. Clark's first tips for travelling is not to sit for an extended period of time.

"I know it's tedious, but just make frequent stops," Dr. Clark said, saying three hours is the most you should be in the car for at a time.

As for the kids, parents are always trying to keep them entertained on road trips but making them look out the window and draw in a book, but Dr. Clark knows that it's not always possible.

"After a while, they get bored with that," he said. "I'm not going to lie, some of those little DVD players have been lifesavers for us."

Another way they keep the kids happy is allowing every kid to bring one pillow and a blanket to keep them comfortable.

"Many times they will fall asleep with their neck kinked over to one side," Dr. Clark said. "Having a little cushion is much easier on their [spine]."

As for overpacking, Dr. Clark knows that it's going to happen with families. "We're debating getting a trailer," he joked, saying that he is already strapping down half their stuff to the roof of their SUV.

The most important tip is to stay safe on the road and enjoy the drive.
