The federal government has announced that it has signed a new contract to implement twenty brand-new state-of-the-art weather radars.

The project is expected to cost $83 million, and these new facilities will be built across the country in the next seven years. These will be used to improve the ability to warn people about severe weather, including tornadoes.

The government says the new system will cover more of Canada and double the detection range for any severe weather system, and give more accurate forecasts so that municipalities can plan accordingly to the weather.
