The Winnipeg Police Service says they discovered heavy smoke pouring from a residence during a late-morning fire in the Lakewood neighbourhood today.

At 11:05 a.m. on Tuesday, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a call of a house fire in the 0-100 block of Kay Cresent.

When arriving, crews discovered heavy smoke pouring out of the bungalow.

Crews quickly began offensively fighting the fire, but due to the extent of the fire, crews were forced to retreat and fight defensively before being able to enter the building for a second time.

All members of the household self-evacuated before crews arrived.

The WFPS says the fire was extinguished by 12:07 p.m.

Significant damage to the home was caused by smoke, water, and fire damages.

There are no damage estimates at this time.
