Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) is urging people to cook safely.

On the morning of July 18, 2019, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment complex in the 600 block of Simcoe Street.

WFPS says, "Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke coming from the windows of one of the suites. An offensive attack was launched and crews were able to keep the fire contained to the suite of origin. It was declared under control at 8:04 a.m."

The building's residents self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. One individual was assessed on the scene by paramedics but did not require transportat to hospital.

WFPS says, "Preliminary observations suggest its cause may have been accidental due to unattended cooking.

"Residents are reminded to always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Stove burners should always be turned off when leaving the kitchen, even for a short time. Anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — should always be kept away from the stovetop."
