A large fire in the city's Centennial neighbourhood is keeping Winnipeg fire crews busy Friday morning.

Shortly after 2 a.m., fire crews responded to a three-storey apartment complex at the corner of William Avenue and Furby Street.

When crews arrived on-scene, they encountered a well-involved fire with heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. A defensive attack was launched as fire conditions made it unsafe for crews to enter the building.

One neighbouring home was evacuated. Crews worked to protect it, however, it suffered water and heat damage.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time, but the building is expected to be a complete loss.

At this time, crews remain at the scene using aerial ladders and hose streams to fight the fire. It is expected that they will remain at the scene for most of the day.

As a result, William Avenue is closed in both directions between Sherbrook Street and Isabel Street.
