People are lacing up and hitting the ice at the Forks this weekend.

The Forks announced that the first portion of the Red River Mutual Trail is now open on the Assiniboine River.

The Port Rink is also open now, and the Forks said lots of activities are planned for New Year's celebrations.

For now, it's just a short section from the docks to the CN bridge to the west.

The Forks says they hope to open extensions of the trail soon as weather allows them to safely do so.

The Forks also hopes to add winter bike trails this year.

The warming huts are expected to be put on the ice in late January.
