A former Winnpeg teacher is facing a long list of charges following an intense investigation surrounding a student at Acadia Junior High.

In October 2022, the Winnipeg Police Service's Child Abuse Unit received a report regarding an alleged sexual assault and luring of a teenage student who attended Acadia.

Police say the survivor reported that over seven months between 2021 and 2022, a teacher at this school allegedly forged an inappropriate relationship with her. During this timeframe, there was alleged sexual communication using social media.

On one occasion, while at school, police say the accused allegedly attempted to kiss the survivor. She pulled away and ran. The survivor was not physically injured during these incidents.

On March 4, 2023, the Child Abuse Unit arrested 32-year-old Jan Marcopined Laya.

The former teacher has been charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, and two counts of child luring

He was released on a Release Order with conditions prohibiting contact and communication with children under the age of 18.
