JUNO nominated and GMA award-winning worship leader, recording artist and producer Fraser Campbell spent a year not doing music to find his identity.

Campbell first went on tour in 2007 and has been intently focused on making music for the last seven years.

The reason he has stuck with it for so long? "Used to be because I got my identity from it," Campbell admits.

Campbell's identity was tied up in a lot of things and he says, "It took a couple of crises where I basically had to go, 'Oh, I need to step back.'

"And I was doing everything I could to not step back because I was so concerned about being successful."

In can be conflicting Campbell says, "In some ways, it's a noble thing - you want to do stuff for God.

"But when your very worth is tied into it and when that gets threatened to be taken away and you feel like everything you are will vanish, that's a problem."

After taking a year to step back and stop working on music, Campbell found new avenues and a purpose for his musical gifts.

Campbell has taken to producing music - like that of Amelia Charles' album Lost // Found - along with working on a new album.

Charles says working with Campbell and his new point of view on music and identity has been beneficial to her budding career.

"It's very helpful to work with someone who has already been around the block because, otherwise, I would probably struggle a lot more," she says.

After Campbell's sabbatical, he says, "I had to get stuff reevaluated and come back really carefully. It doesn't mean I have it all figured out now - I don't.

"But at least I can think that way on my own now and not have to come to huge roadblocks before I can process through those things again."

Campbell and Charles are currently on tour throughout Manitoba.
