Multiple eyewitnesses reported a funnel cloud south of the Altona Sunday afternoon around 3:20 p.m.

The community's emergency siren was activated as Tornado Warnings were issued for the Municipality of Rhineland including Altona, Plum Coulee and Gretna as well as the R.M. of Montcalm and Municipality of Emerson-Franklin. All Tornado Warnings were ended just before 4 p.m.

"This particular thunderstorm developed very rapidly Sunday afternoon, and was extremely localized to the Warned areas," says CMOS accredited weathercaster Chris Sumner.

"There are instances where rapidly developing thunderstorms can produce funnel clouds, and it appears that is what happened in this case. As of 4:45 p.m. Sunday, there were no reports of it touching down."

Severe Thunderstorm Watches remained in place in for the Pembina and Red River Valleys, as well as all of Southeastern Manitoba. "An approaching cold front from the west will slice into that hot and humid air, and all the ingredients will be in place for thunderstorm development, possibly severe, late [Sunday] afternoon and this evening," says Sumner.
