At 8:44 a.m. on March 24, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in an apartment complex in the 400 block of Furby Street. A second alarm was called, increasing the number of apparatus and WFPS crew members on the scene, due to the potential for high life hazards when dealing with an apartment complex. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke coming from the building. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control 9:12 a.m.

Most occupants of the apartment complex self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews, but firefighters were required to assist a few individuals to safety. One individual was assessed on scene by paramedics but did not require transport to hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The City’s Emergency Social Services team was deployed to the incident and is assisting approximately 10 individuals in finding temporary housing supports.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
