A 16-year-old girl has died in an officer-involved shooting after a group of teenagers allegedly went on a crime spree, stealing an SUV, robbing two liquor stores, and being involved in a hit and run.

Tuesday morning an SUV was stolen from a Whytewold-area home. The next morning, the vehicle was present at a Transcona Square Liquor Mart robbery and later involved with a hit-and-run with a fence in the area of Keewatin Street and William Avenue West.

"Some of the youth had been involved in other events that they were charged criminally," Chief of Police Danny Smyth says.

Yesterday evening, at approximately 5:25 p.m, the police say several suspects were threatening to harm staff at the Sage Creek Liquor Mart and stole alcohol. The suspects then fled in a stolen vehicle

As the suspects were fleeing, an East District General Patrol unit was in the area and began following the SUV. The SUV noticed the cruiser and then rammed the police vehicle.

Later, at approximately 5:37 p.m when other police vehicles have joined the pursuit, the vehicle was involved in a collision. There were no injuries as a result of the vehicle incident.

After the collision, a 16-year-old was shot by police. She was taken to hospital where she later dies from her injuries.

"The police officers involved did not come to work expecting to be involved in a shooting," Smyth says. "This has been a tragic period of time for our community."

Members of the Homicide Unit are continuing with the investigation, and the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified.
