While it's not quite a heat wave, temperatures have been above normal since the beginning of the month. When will they end?

The regular daytime high for this time of year is around 23 degrees Celsius. Winnipeg has exceeded that since the beginning of the month, often by 5 or more degrees.

"Definitely a switch in the seasons," said Natalie Hasell, a warning preparedness meteorologist from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The above average temperatures for both daytime high and nighttime lows is forecasted to stay until this coming Wednesday. Even though it's warm, this is not considered a heat wave, which is defined as three days in a row with a temperature exceeding 33 degrees.

Hasell said that, even though this is not extreme heat, it's always good to be prepared. Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeinated drinks when it's hot outside.

Most important, though, Hasell warns about the dangers of leaving kids or pets in a closed vehicle.

"The temperatures spike really quickly," Hasell said. "If outside is already extremely hot and dangerous, things tend not to end very well."

Leaving a child under the age of 10 in a vehicle can result in up to five years in jail.
