Ukrainian-Canadians have been overwhelmed with the response of Manitobans as people come together to help people fleeing war in Ukraine as well as find ways to help the country defend itself against the Russian invasion.

Maryka Chabluk is a member of The Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Manitoba Provincial Council (UCC-MB). UCC as a whole represents the 1.4 million Ukrainians who now call Canada home. She says watching events unfold in Ukraine has been heartbreaking for her and others.

"But it's not just Ukrainian people, who are heartbroken," she says. Chabluk says they've seen an outpouring of support both here in Manitoba, and from people around the globe. "It's so beautiful to see so so many people in the community, and in the wider world who are so interested in helping bring justice to Ukraine."

Prayer an important piece

For Chabluk, as a Christian, she says she has been leaning on her faith, and has been encouraged to see so many saying that they are praying for the situation. "Like to me, that's a miracle in itself," she says referencing people on national news shows and other places bringing up prayer. Chabluk encourages people to continue to pray not only for the people of Ukraine and world leaders but to pray for Russians who are speaking out against their government's invasion of Ukraine.

How else you can help

For Manitobans wanting to help in other ways, Chabluk says the UCC-MB's website is a great place to start. There you can find links to verified charities to donate money, ways to help displaced Ukrainians, and ways that you can volunteer.
