A Winnipeg transit driver who's garnered attention for helping a man out of harm's way on Portage Ave says he was just doing the right thing.

Derek Hanley’s bus stopped on Portage Ave early Sunday morning, right before Arlington St., when he noticed that the time was ticking down on the cross walk, and that the man crossing the street wouldn’t make it across before the light turned green.

“I opened up my window and waved my arm frantically, I got the traffic to actually stop, and then once the bus was secure, I jumped out.”

Seeing things unfold, Hanley wanted to be sure everyone involved was safe.

“I really thought the gentleman was going to get hit, the vehicles didn’t see him, and I don’t want to see anybody get hurt just because they’re trying to cross the street, especially a person that’s in a wheelchair.”

Hanley ran onto the street and asked the man, “Can I push you across the road so that you don’t get hit? The man replied, ‘I’d appreciate that very much.’”

Normally, people at work know Hanley as more of a tough guy.
