As much of the world faces anxiety over COVID-19, a story of hope in Jesus shone brightly at the box office this weekend.

The new biopic on Christian contemporary artist Jeremy Camp, I Still Believe, was the number 1 movie on Friday raking in $4 million.

It finished the weekend at number 2, with a total box office of $9.5 million. Onward took the number 1 spot at $10.5 million.

The film was inspired by Camp's hit song 'I Still Believe,' and is based on his journey of love and faith with Melissa Lynn Henning.

Some critics have been hard on the film, calling it a "cheesy" faith-based film that preaches to the choir. That choir, however, has enjoyed the sermon. Fans have given the film an 'A' on CinemaScore. That was the highest rating of any of the weekend's films.

The film stars Riverdale‘s KJ Apa as Christian singer/songwriter Jeremy Camp and Britt Robertson as Camp’s late wife. It also features Gary Sinise and Shania Twain as Camp’s parents and Abigail Cowen as Camp’s current wife, Adrienne Camp.

COVID-19 is expected to slow box office numbers over the coming weeks. Quebec has already ordered all movie theatres closed and many other provinces and states are taking similar measures.
