The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is looking into the events that led up to a suspect being admitted into the hospital.

IIU says they are investigating the circumstances that led to a 25-year-old man being arrested and sustain serious injuries.

On  Monday night, Winnipeg Police Service officers were in the area of Assiniboine Avenue and Kennedy Street where they then conducted a traffic stop. The WPS says the driver then fled his vehicle, running towards the river.

Engaging in pursuit by foot, officers followed the man and deployed a taser. Officers say the man fell face-forward onto the gravel road.

Then taken into custody, the 25-year-old was taken to the Health Sciences Centre. The man remains at the hospital where he is being treated for a broken arm and a possible broken rib.

“As these injuries fall within the definition of serious injury pursuant to regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate,” IIU says in a statement.

They are asking witnesses or others with video footage to contact the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
