A standing hearing will be held to determine who can take part in the upcoming inquest into the death of a 43-year-old man from Winnipeg.

On February 23, 2019, Winnipeg police responded to a call about a man breaking into an apartment suite located on Colony St., armed with a hammer.

When the police showed up, they found a man matching the description, one Machuar Madut.

They then proceeded to attempt an arrest, but Madut fled, according to officers. When they caught up with him, they initially tried to bring him down with tasers, to no effect.

When he approached the officers with the hammer raised, multiple shots were fired at Madut.

An ambulance brought him to the Health Sciences Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

The chief medical examiner, under the Fatality Inquiries Act, has called the inquest.

Before authorities look into this death to see how they can prevent further deaths like this, a judge will decide who from the public can be apart of the inquest.

Anyone interested in applying can call 204-239-3344 or email jay.funke@gov.mb.ca on or before June 29, 2020.

The standing hearing will take place on July 13 at 2:00 p.m. in courtroom 403 in Winnipeg.
