Tom Hanks really was the ideal choice to play the iconic Mister Rogers, and because of more than his acting chops.

Ironically, Hanks and Mister Rogers are related.

Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, were surprised with the information while at a screening in New York of A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, in which Hanks plays Mister Rogers, reports Consequence of Sound.

Using Ancestry.com, Access Hollywood revealed to the couple that Tom Hanks and Fred Rogers are actually sixth cousins.

Shocked, Wilson responded to the news: “No, impossible. No, you’re pulling our leg.”

However, Hanks was less startled by his relationship to the beloved children's show host.

“It all just comes together, you see," Hanks says.

Ancestry Director of Research Jennifer Utley said the discovery of the link between the two personalities is no surprise due to their "uncanny" similarities.

"Even if we don’t know it, our pasts impact our present. You never know what you’ll find on your journey of personal discovery," says Utley.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, which is a biopic of Fred Rogers' life, is showing in theatres now.
