Canadian figure skating legends Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir have announced that they're preparing to retire from figure skating.

The duo made the announcement Tuesday evening on Twitter in a video.

"We have some news for everyone, for our fans, people who have supported us," Moir says in the opening of the video shot as the pair skate around a rink together.

"After 22 years it feels like the right time to step away from the sport," Virtue says. The pair will go on one final tour before retiring.

"We feel like the most fortunate kids in Canada, still," Moir says talking about the support the pair still receives from Canadians after more than two decades of competition.

"Twenty-two years, and it's been ... I can't even put it into words," Moir says.

The pair won gold medals at the Olympics in 2010 and 2018. They also won a silver in 2014. On top of the Olympic medals they also won three World Champion titles, three Four Continents champion titles, and eight Canadian National titles.

Virtue says that figure skating in Canada is "in such good hands," and that "the next generation of skaters is going to blaze new trails, break all of our records, and we can't wait to cheer them on."

Virtue and Moir have been skating together since they were eight and 10-years-old respectively.
