Thousands of Winnipeggers are left treading water Tuesday morning as they attempt to get children registered for swimming lessons.

The City of Winnipeg's Leisure Guide officially opened for registration at 8 a.m., which included swimming lessons. However, users have been greeted by an error page saying "this site can't be reached."

It's not clear at this time what caused the website's failure, whether it was too many users at once or another reason. The City has not provided an update as of yet.

Users online have also indicated that the City's 311 phone service is also down.

As of 8:40 a.m. some people have had success getting to the main landing page but still experience a non-responsive page when attempting to go to the swimming registration page.

Several people online say they were on the swimming registration page and "in line" when the site crashed.

The City has not immediately returned a request for comment.

Update - 9:08 a.m.

The City of Winnipeg says that they "have temporarily suspended Leisure Guide registration while we work through technical difficulties."

There still is no word on the cause of the crash. Many people online have called for registration to be completely postponed and to start fresh on another day.

The City says that it will provide an update on when registration will recommence, but they have not indicated when that update may come.

"We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience," the update says.

Update - 11:34 a.m.

Leisure Guide registration will commence today at noon.

The City of Winnipeg says that the reason the public was not able to access the website was "due to an unforeseen technical issue with our third-party vendor."

The issue has now been resolved and Winnipeg residents will be able to register today at noon. Non-residents registration will continue to be open on Thursday, September 1, at 8 a.m.
